What is Psychology?

Psychology in simple terms is the study of mind and behavior, how it works, and how it affects our behavior. It contains biological influences, social pressures, and environmental pressures. It also includes the study of conscious and unconscious phenomena, including feelings and thoughts. It is a fairly new field that has gained immense importance in the new world with its experimental roots in the 19th century. Specifically, it came into being as a scientific discipline by the establishment of the first Institute of Psychology in 1879 at Leipzig in Germany by Wilhelm Wundt.

Psychology is divided into different branches as follows:

  • Abnormal Psychology: It is the study of abnormal behavior and psychopathology. It also studies the causes and diagnoses of abnormal behavior.

  • Clinical Psychology: It is the study of mental disorders, their assessment, diagnoses, and treatment.

  • Cognitive Psychology: This is a study of human thought processes including memory, attention, decision-making, and problem-solving.

  • Social Psychology: It is a study of group behavior, social influences on individual behavior, and conformity.

  • Personality Psychology: It is a study of human personality, how human personality develops, and the patterns of thoughts and behavior.

  • Forensic Psychology: This is a speciality in professional psychology characterized by activities primarily intended to provide professional psychological expertise within the judicial and legal systems.

  • Occupational Psychology: It is the study of human behavior in the workplace. It is an applied discipline within the field of psychology. We also refer to it as Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Organizational Psychology, and Work and Organizational Psychology.

It is important to understand that no single branch of psychology holds more importance than any other. Each branch adds up to our understanding of the many different psychological factors that affect who we are, how we behave, and how we think.

Psychology helps to contribute to individuals and society in many ways:

  • Helps us to understand why people behave the way they do, and what the reason behind their behavior is. Helps us to form a deeper understanding of human behavior.

  • Helping people achieve their goals: Psychology studies human behavior very deeply and also makes people realize what their aim is, and how to achieve that goal perfectly.

  • Psychology helps to improve productivity: It motivates people to achieve their goals efficiently as well as more productively.

  • Psychology helps to understand various factors that influence behavior: It focuses on social and environmental factors that impact behavior to a greater extent

  • Psychology helps to understand issues that impact health, daily life, and well-being: Psychology very deeply understands how our health issues may impact our mind, daily life chaos, and also both physical and mental well-being.

Importance of Psychology in Various Fields of Education

Psychology helps people in large part because it can explain why people act the way they do. It not only matters what we learn but also 'how’ we learn and process the information. This is directly or indirectly influenced by psychology. Psychology is very important in decision-making, stress management, and predicting future behavior based on the understanding of past behavior.

  • The role of psychology in education is that it helps determine the appropriate methods and solutions that support the educational process and achieves its goals in a practical way.

  • Psychology helps to examine the behavior of the learner within the classroom, as well as provides teachers with important information. It also provides essential theoretical and practical experiences to learners, helping them increase their level and skills.

  • Psychology helps to understand the potential of the student and their interaction with other classmates.

  • Psychology helps teachers to know how the learning process takes place, it helps teachers to guide the students in the right direction.

  • Psychology affects education in every field of the teaching and learning process. It helps to build a relationship between the teachers and the students.

  • Psychology in every field plays an important role in understanding human behavior, causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

  • Psychology is an ever-growing field, and in the future, it will grow more and more to encourage people to understand themselves.

Thus, it is evident that psychology is closely linked with education. Psychology is the study of human behavior whereas education is the process of modifying human behavior. Both are complementary to each other. A branch derived from this is educational psychology which deals with human behavior and its modification through learning. Educational psychology is concerned with the application of principles and techniques of psychology to the solution of the problems confronting the teacher.
